Gary Plaag owns and operates Couragio Consulting, a Williamsburg-based communication
consulting practice he started in 1998, following a 19-year career in Information Technology
management and leadership. He also is an adjunct instructor of business communications at
the Mason School of Business at William & Mary.
He has over 22 years of experience conducting seminars and individual coaching sessions for
executives and leaders in law enforcement, financial services, information technology, nursing,
association management, and commercial construction. Mr. Plaag specializes in helping clients
develop and hone their presentation and public speaking skills, networking skills, interpersonal
communication skills, as well as mitigate performance anxiety and enhance audience
Prior to moving from Northern Virginia to the Williamsburg area in 2014, he served as an
adjunct instructor in the Department of Communication at George Mason University in Fairfax,
Virginia from 2003-2010.
In addition, Mr. Plaag is a 35-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), where he
is a certified performance judge and an international music performance coach. He has also
served on numerous boards of directors for non-profit organizations. He is a member of the
Rotary Club of Newport News and the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg.
Mr. Plaag earned a master’s degree in Communication from George Mason University and a
bachelor’s degree in Government from the College of William and Mary.
